  21. Hi, this is something I dug out after I got hold of PD Soft's
  22. Card Games CD, and saw they claimed the cardsets could be played
  23. directly off CD.. WRONG!! It's OK if you play it with their
  24. version on CD, but try playing it with your own version. No go.

  26. Anyway, I've dug out the docs for the original Klondike fix and
  27. I decided to write a standard Commodore installer script, to make
  28. things as easy as possible for people to use. I also changed it
  29. a little bit so that you shouldn't have to change a thing once you
  30. install this fix (for people who run it off a launcher like
  31. Task Bar, Tools Daemon, whatever)....

  33. What now follows is the original documentation from the version
  34. I sent down to Active Software as it was destined for their
  35. Klondike Gold, but seeing as there was some dispute between PD Soft
  36. and Active Software and the cardsets ended up being used on their
  37. Card Games CD, I don't think that's going to be seeing the light
  38. of day :-(   (Oh, and according to other authors of cardsets on
  39. the CD, it's actually Chris from Active who is the baddie here,
  40. not PD Soft... I got told otherwise by Chris.. Believe who you
  41. like, I'm sure it'll all come out in the end!).

  46. OK folks, just a quicky here... This is a small patch
  47. I wrote for myself almost as soon as I got the HD version
  48. of KLONDIKE III (ages ago in other words). It was only ever
  49. meant for my ease of use, so I'm sorry it's a bit crap, but
  50. I don't even pretend to be a programmer....

  52. Anyway, what this does is a hacked-up way of letting you
  53. use the file requester in Klondike PROPERLY! You see, at the
  54. moment the file requester is a bit crap (sorry REKO).. It
  55. only lets you point to the CARDS directory in the REKO dir.
  56.  
  57. But, what if you want to play the cardsets from CD? For
  58. example, SCI-FI SENSATIONS and the NFA AGA EXPERIENCE both
  59. have cardsets unpacked on the CD. But you have to go through
  60. the hassle of copying the cardset to the CARDS DIR on your HD.
  61. Now you don't.

  65. All you do is run the intall script, and answer the simple
  66. questions.... Basically you just show the installer where you
  67. have the old version of Klondike installed, then say if you want
  68. the old one backed up (just in case).

  70. The only other thing it asks is if you want to have your CARDS:
  71. and MUSIC: assigns pointing to the default locations (ie the
  72. music and cards directories in the Klondike program directory),
  73. and if not it asks you to pick the new directories.

  77. Once you have done this, you will be able to play the game as
  78. normal, but say you get a new CD with cardsets and you don't want
  79. to have to copy them over to your HD to play them?

  81. Well, just run the game, then point an assign to the directory
  82. with the new cardsets in them.

  84. For example, if you wanted to point it to the new cards on PD SOFT's
  85. Card Games CD, you would run the game, pop back to Workbench and
  86. type "ASSIGN CARDS CARDS_CD:KLONDIKE-III/CARDS", go back to the
  87. game and press F to bring up the file requester.

  89. Oh yes, this fix also applies to the music file-requester as well,
  90. so you don't have to copy the MED tunes over to the MUSIC DIR..

  97. Like I said before, I'm sorry it's a bit crap, but with REKO
  98. apparently leaving the Amiga (NO!!!!!), it's the only way this
  99. bug is gonna get fixed by the looks of things.. Unless some
  100. cool programmer wants to fix it so it uses a REAL file requester?

  102. Incidentally, in case anyone I know is wondering, I haven't bothered
  103. releasing this through the normal channels because it's a simple fix
  104. for an old game, so I just released it to ACTIVE SOFTWARE..

  109.  Active Software heheheheheheheh)...

  113. KNOWN BUGS

  116. None that I know of. I have tested the game extensively since day one,
  117. and the only problem I can see is if you re-assign either CARDS: or
  118. MUSIC: and then try and use the built in prefs file (ie pressing
  119. 1-0 or shift 1-0), as it will try and load the music/cards file
  120. based on what is set in your prefs file... Not a lot I can do about
  121. that.. You have to re-assign the offending assign back to normal.
